Rapid spread of mobile device accelerated the expansion of mobile marketing

As reported by GfK, Vietnamese sales revenue of smart phones in 2014 reached 6 million units, bringing Vietnam to the third largest market among 7 Southeast Asian countries. Following the rapid spread of smart phones, online activities accordingly have witnessed many changes. According to the survey conducted by the Vietnam E-Commerce and Information Technology Agency (VECITA), in 2014, web traffic from desktop PCs fell from 84% (2010) to 33%, while traffic from mobile devices sharply increased from 27% up to 65%. In addition, 58% of the respondents say they have ever made online purchases, of which 13% purchases are made through mobile applications, doubling when compared to the previous year.

What will happen to the fast food market when occupied by two major chains?

According to Ministry of Industry and Trade’ report, annual food expense by Vietnamese has increased by 5.1% on average and is expected to reach 29.5 billion dollars (300 dollars per capita) in 2016. A survey by Canvassco on how often Vietnamese dine out in 2014 demonstrated 40% saying that they dine out everyday, 37% once a week and 13% once a month. The food service industry has become more and more competitive as Vietnamese consumption keeps increasing. Above all, fast food market draw more attention as it earned up to 1.35 trillion VND in 2014 and its CAGR is reaching 15~20% per year.

The advantages of foreign brand products in Vietnam functional food market (May 2015)

According to Vietnam Association of Functional Food (VAFF), Vietnam functional food market reached 650 million USD, ranked 3rd in the ASEAN market. The y-o-y average growth rate of the market is expected to be 20% in the next 10 years. Due to the easy procedures for registration and import, in 2013, the market has nearly 7,000 types of products doubling from 2011, the number of players in the industry also doubled from 2012 to 3,500 companies.

Renewable energy, barrier to economic development (Apr 2015)

Vietnam Government has announced a master plan on taking the global trend – transitioning to use renewable energy sources.With a hope that as a long-term strategy, this plan will increase the proportion of renewable energy in the total power generation. In 2013, the capacity of wind energy, solar energy, biomass energy are 55MW, 4 MW, and 150 MW respectively; all adding small scale hydropower account for only 3% of the total national electricity generation, however, the plan sets quite high goal targeting to reach 5.6% in 2020 and 9.1% in 2030.
