“100,000 sets installed, 30-40% of which are in HCMC”
Vietnamese households are going green with the help of solar energy. The government has a plan to increase the percentage of households using solar-powered applications from 4.3% in 2015 to 12% by 2020 and 36% by 2030.
The applications include 2 main categories: thermal application and electrical application.
Thermal application primarily goes under the form of solar water heater (SWH).
This is the most developed branch of domestic solar use in Vietnam, as reportedly around 100,000 sets are installed all over the country per year, 30 – 40% of which are located in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam Government has announced a master plan on taking the global trend – transitioning to use renewable energy sources.With a hope that as a long-term strategy, this plan will increase the proportion of renewable energy in the total power generation. In 2013, the capacity of wind energy, solar energy, biomass energy are 55MW, 4 MW, and 150 MW respectively; all adding small scale hydropower account for only 3% of the total national electricity generation, however, the plan sets quite high goal targeting to reach 5.6% in 2020 and 9.1% in 2030.

Vietnam coal industry, demand is going to surpass supply
